Literary Analysis Essay - Thoughts

It may seem daunting to write your first literary analysis. And it can be. But don't let it. Like any assignment, approach it in chunks. I've eaten many a large pizza this way.
First decide what appealed to you about the short story, "To Build A Fire." Was it the characters? Was it the way it was written? Did Jack London's life interest you? What about the themes presented - determinism, instinct versus intellectualism, survival at any cost...Now you've got something to chew on - much like the aforementioned pizza.
So, pick one and begin thinking. "How can I say this in an interesting and clever way. How can I hook my reader into reading my essay? What information do I need from the text ("To Build A Fire" - the primary source) and a secondary source to back me up in my point of view on this story. What are my own thoughts about the focus I've chosen.
Then put it down on paper. Click it out. Do your thing.
Make sure you've given enough support from your primary and secondary sources to do the job you need to do - you need evidence to support your argument. Now stop. Set it aside and go get a sandwich. Time is on your side. In two days, pick up your essay and look at it again. What do you think? Does it hold water?
Make your changes. Now polish it. Edit and revise it. Take out wordiness. Blend in your quotations and paraphrases. Refine your introduction and conclusion.
And before you know it, pizza gone!
